About the Opportunity

Our design and engineering department is a small team of driven individuals with diverse skillsets within the industries we practice.  We work closely as a team, and with our shop and field personnel in creating efficient, safe, and high functioning design solutions. 

The role of a Civil Engineer-In-Training (EIT) is to work within the department on projects from the initial bid and concept development thru final installation. The successful candidate will work with intermediate and senior Engineers to create efficient structural steel designs, with unique project constraints. The position includes a variety of tasks such as performing calculations, field visits, 3D modelling using Tekla Structures, and project coordination. 

This position is geared towards an entry level individual who will develop skills and advance with time and experience.  The intent is to develop experience so that the candidate can eventually gain their Professional Engineer status, and manage and design projects independently. 

The position is based out of our offices in Sperling, MB. Monday to Friday starting at 7AM. OT and weekend work may be required on an infrequent basis. Travel may be required to perform site visits.

Additionally, your day-to-day responsibilities would include:

  • Work with the Design and Project Management Team, and/or customers directly, to fully understand project requirements and customer needs.
  • Support senior staff in performing Project Management duties as required, such as estimating, scheduling and coordination.
  • Develop a conceptual level design approach as needed to reach alignment on proposed solutions before detailed work.
  • Perform calculations and analysis to ensure designs meet applicable code and other requirements.
  • Model and detail designs to identify any fitment issues and perform design optimization.
  • Create and organize complete work packages and instructions for fabrication.  Provide supplementary instruction to downstream personnel as needed for efficient and quality execution.
  • Perform site visits as required to review projects to verify designs are adhered to and to receive feedback for continued improvement.

About You

The successful candidate is expected to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. They will be expected to make decisions based on gained knowledge and applied judgement.

The following skills or experience are either required or considered an asset:

  • Written and Verbal Communication proficiency in English is required.
  • Must be able to read drawings and communicate graphically.
  • Candidate must have received a post-secondary Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook, as well as AutoCAD or Tekla Structures.

Sperling strives to maintain compensation in alignment with wages reported in EGM’s annual salary survey. We anticipate that the starting salary will be in the range of $30-$35/hour paid weekly, based on skills and experience, along with a range of benefits, including:
